Morning of the third day, we wanted a walking tour of the city, so the best mode of transport happened to be right at the door step of our hotel, facing the turnaround of the cable car Powell-Mason line and directly across the street from Westfield Loving Hut. We joined the long snaking queue and chatted with an Austrian tourist on her first visit to San Francisco..
No sooner had we wondered whether we had to purchase a ticket then some kind tourists pointed out the ticket booth for us just outside our view along market and 5th. So we had to join another long and growing queue at the ticket booth together with our Austrian friend.
Finally we had our day tickets, hopped on the Powell-Mason line and two stops away at the street junction we were off the cable car, our tickets still brand new.. Along O'Farrell we had a pleasant stroll and it was little sister who first noticed the familiar old sign of the vegan Golden Era in this new Golden Age.

This is the view looking at the arguably oldest vegan restaurant West of the Bay Area from the vantage point of the table of honour, a well liked corner of the restaurant distinguished by an overhead Celestial lamp hanging from the ceiling.
We had already seen the owner outside, waiting for him to be relieved of his work to join us at the table.. Lunch was easy to order, we had the best dishes from the restaurant served at our table.

Very soon another vegan friend joined us and it was reunion time, with cups of Chinese tea being poured endlessly just like in the good old times again.

We talked of our relationship going back so many years, and we chatted on the development of Loving Hut around the Bay Area.. so much to share and so little time to do it..

We had also ordered the vegan Pad Thai, over and above the recommendations made by the owner, because we wanted to compare the taste with the Vegetarian House. Little sister remembered it was dry by the time we were served at the Vegetarian House, but here at Golden Era, the Pad Thai was a perfect vegan dish. We gave it full marks secretly... Of course, little sister's taste was pampered by the undending serving of different flavoured cakes... ask and it shall be served..
We bade the owner farewell as we travelled on the next leg of our trip, this time riding on the electric Jeep..

Today we introduce the traditional Malay vegan dish, called Lontong.
It has several unique features. Rice cubes cut into perfect squares, looks nice and tasty. And the vegetable curry sauce, with cabbages and long beans cooked ripe and soft after stewing in curry for a long time. It is sweet and spicy due to coconut milk being added, which gives it a very distinctive South-East Asian flavour.
This vegan dish which can be ordered from Loving Hut Singapore as a buffet item, adds some garnishings such as carrots and brinjal, with a touch of hot sambal chilli.

When I think of fried kway teow, I remembered the mobile hawker near my house in my youth. The kway teow seller had a secret ingredient that keeps his customer coming to him again and again. That secret ingredient is the sweet sticky black soy sauce. Well I don't have the sweet sauce, so I have to make do with ordinary dark soy sauce.
Ingredients:
3 small vegetarian sausages
4 vegetarian fish balls
3 dry shitakae mushrooms
1 bunch of french beans
1 packet fresh hor-fun or kway teow
2 teaspoon vegetarian seasoning powder
3 teaspoon dark and light soy sauce
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 tablespoon vegetable cooking oil
Preparation:
1) Soak the dried shitakae mushroom in a small bowl of water for 10 minutes
till it soften. Then cut off the stem and slice the mushroom.
2) Cut off the end part of french beans and chop into 1 inch pieces.
3) slice the vegetarian fish ball into half, then slice each half again.
4) chop the vegetarian sausage into small manageable pieces.
5) prepare a small bowl to add vegetarian seasoning powder, dark and light soy sauce and mix thoroughly.
Cooking:
1) Heat up a flat frying pan or Chinese wok with some cooking oil.
2) Add in the shitakae mushrooms and french beans first, stir fry a while and cover the frying pan or wok with a cover for 3 minutes.
3) Add in the vegetarian sausages and sliced vegetarian fish balls and stir fry another 3 minutes.
4) Pour in the seasoning and soy sauce mixture and cover the pan to let the vegetables cook for 5 minutes.
5) Finally put all the hor fun or kway teow and stir fry for another 5 minutes until the kway teow becomes dry. You can optionally add in some bean sprouts. Add some sea salt and optionally some pepper and tomato ketchup if you prefer.

Cooking at home is a very simple affair. The main thing to remember is to be creative and use whatever ingredients happen to be available that day. Here's a simple recipe for a delicious vegan fried rice..
Ingredients:
1) 1 plate of over-night rice, left over from last evening dinner.
2) 4 dried shitakae mushrooms
3) 2 fresh round white mushrooms
4) 3 kangkong stalks or other green vegetables
5) some leaves of white cabbage
6) half a cup of mixed vegetables, carrot cubes, green peas and corn
7) 1 vegetarian sausage
8) 2 stalks of long beans
9) 1 teaspoon vegetarian seasoning powder
10) 1 teaspoon vegetarian ketchup
11) 1 tablespoon soy sauce, light and dark type
12) 2 teaspoon of salt
13) 2 tablespoon of vegetarian cooking oil
Preparation:
1) soak the 4 dried shitakae for 10 minutes till soft.
Cut away the stem, and cut the rest of mushroom in thin slices.
2) cut the round white mushroom in half, then slice the rest.
3) cut the long beans into 1 and half inch pieces, small enough to cook fast.
4) cut the stalk of kangkong into 1 inch pieces, so that it can cook thoroughly in
minimum time. Just tear the leaves into manageable pieces, it will shrink when cook.
5) tear off some leaves of white Chinese cabbage, make it small pieces for easier cooking.
6) cut 1 or 2 small vegetarian sausage into pieces.
7) prepare a bowl of mixed carrot cubes, green peas and corn to add color to dish.
8) pour the vegetarian seasoning powder into a small bowl, add the salt and 1 tablespoon
of light and dark soy sauce each. Add a little bit of water and dissolve the seasoning.
Cooking:
1) Pour some cooking oil into a flat frying pan or use the Chinese wok.
2) heat the oil for a while, then add the soften shitakae mushroom pieces and long beans. Cover the frying
pan to let the mushroom cook a while and avoid the oil spilling out.
3) Add in the cabbage leaves and kangkong. Stir fry for 3 minutes.
4) Add in the mixed veggies, corn, carrots and green peas. Stir fry a while in medium heat.
5) Add in the vegetarian sausages and pour the mixed vegetarian seasoning.
Cover the frying pan and stew the vegetables for 5 minutes.
6) Check that the vegetables are well cooked and the kang kong and cabbage have shrunk in size. Add in the
plate of over-night rice and stir fry throughly to let the rice soak up all the seasoning. The fired rice should
be relatively dry after some frying. Add in more salt or tomato ketchup to taste.
The fried rice should turn from white to a nice golden yellow after soaking up the vegetarian seasoning.
Bon vegan appétit !

It's a vegan drink, with soy milk replacing cow's milk.
Looking outside, we saw the decoration at Suntec City..

It looks like the whole city is getting ready to greet the coming Christmas, and people are getting ready to spend serious money in this shopping season..
Have they lost the sense of the real celebration ? Is it all about spending ?
How far have we strayed from God's commandments.. We wondered what is ticking in the minds of people still killing animals every single day with their meals.. We prayed that they will all wake up in time, and then we shall celebrate the real Christmas ! A vegan Christmas !!

Today's Painting of the day, we will look at an enchanting oil painting by Supreme Master Ching Hai entitled "Mangosteen" 山竹果

Mangosteen is often called the "Queen of Fruits". It has a soft, juiyc flesh within a hard fibre shell which is easy to break. If you get the juice stain on your clothes, it can be hard to wash off. It is said to counter the "heatiness" you get from eating too much durian, the "King of Fruits".
At Loving Hut, Suntec Singapore, the recommended dish of the day is the jolly Jolly Rice.

Beautiful to look at and delicious to taste, this is heavenly food ! Yummy !! Lots of vegetable goodness for your body and soul.
From Bible, King James Version, Isaiah 1:11-16
11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?
13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.
15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.
16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
以 賽 亞 書 1:11-16 (Chinese Union Version (Traditional))

This is a painting showing a Golden Dragon Fruit cut in half and exposing many seeds.
